Character Arc

Ikoma is a young steamsmith living on the station of Aragane, where he repairs the great armored trains and quietly works on an invention he believes can finally pierce the heart of a Kabane. Frustrated by a society that hides behind walls and looks down on engineers, he is driven by a fierce wish to give ordinary people a way to fight back instead of merely running.

When a Kabane attack breaches the station, Ikoma is bitten but manages to halt the transformation, becoming a Kabaneri, a being caught between human and Kabane. He keeps his mind and heart intact while gaining great strength and speed, yet the people he longs to protect treat him with fear and suspicion. This tension between his humanity and his new nature shapes much of his journey.

Aboard the armored fortress-train Koutetsujou, Ikoma channels his ingenuity and stubborn idealism into protecting the survivors, often putting himself at great risk. His growing partnership with Mumei pushes him to balance reckless courage with genuine responsibility, and his arc becomes a story about proving that being different does not mean being a monster.
