Character Arc

Naofumi Iwatani is the protagonist of The Rising of the Shield Hero, an ordinary young man pulled from his world and summoned to Melromarc as the Shield Hero, one of the four Cardinal Heroes. Because the Shield cannot attack directly, he is immediately underestimated, and a false accusation soon strips him of allies, reputation, and trust.

Forced to survive alone, Naofumi grows guarded, cynical, and fiercely self-reliant. He buys the slave Raphtalia to fight beside him and gains the filolial Filo, slowly forming a small but devoted party. Through relentless effort he masters defensive and supportive abilities, turning his maligned class into a genuine strength during the Waves of Calamity.

Over the course of the series Naofumi's icy exterior softens as he learns to rely on and protect those close to him. He uncovers the forces manipulating the kingdom and the heroes, and his journey carries him from despised outcast to a respected protector whose loyalty to his companions defines who he becomes.
