Character Arc

Sesshomaru is Inuyasha's older half-brother, a full-blooded dog-demon and the son of the same great demon father. Cold, proud, and immensely powerful, he initially despises Inuyasha for his human blood and covets the Tessaiga, the sword their father left to Inuyasha rather than to him. Early in the series his rivalry with Inuyasha is openly hostile and violent.

Sesshomaru's character deepens after he loses an arm in battle and reluctantly takes in Rin, a mute human orphan he revives with his healing sword, the Tenseiga. Traveling with Rin and the toad-like retainer Jaken, he gradually reveals a buried capacity for compassion, even as he continues to pursue greater strength and forges his own demonic blade, the Bakusaiga.

Over the course of the story Sesshomaru evolves from a ruthless antagonist into a powerful and complex ally against the common enemy Naraku. His bond with Rin in particular softens his disdain for humanity, and by the saga's end he stands as one of the strongest warriors in the series, having found purpose beyond mere conquest.
