About A Place Further Than the Universe
A Place Further Than the Universe follows Mari Tamaki, a second-year high school student who feels her youth slipping away without anything to show for it. She keeps telling herself she will finally do something bold, yet every plan dissolves before she acts on it. Everything changes when she crosses paths with Shirase Kobuchizawa, a fiercely determined classmate who is saving every yen she earns to travel to Antarctica. Shirase's seemingly impossible goal lights a spark in Mari that she cannot ignore.
Shirase's drive is rooted in grief. Her mother, a researcher, disappeared during an Antarctic expedition years earlier, and Shirase is convinced that reaching the icy continent is the only way to feel close to her again. As Mari and Shirase pursue the dream, they are joined by Hinata Miyake, an energetic and self-possessed girl working part-time, and Yuzuki Shiraishi, a young television personality. Together the four form an unlikely team determined to join a civilian expedition to the bottom of the world.
What begins as a wild idea becomes a genuine journey across oceans and ice, testing the girls through seasickness, doubt, homesickness, and the harsh beauty of the polar landscape. The series balances laugh-out-loud comedy with quietly devastating emotional moments, especially as Shirase confronts what really happened to her mother. By the time the expedition reaches Antarctica, the four friends have grown in ways none of them expected, discovering that the farthest place is not just a destination but the courage to chase it.
