About Bonus Family
Bonus Family (Swedish: Bonusfamiljen) is a warm, sharply observed Swedish dramedy that premiered on SVT in 2017 and follows Lisa and Patrik, two recently divorced Stockholm parents in their thirties who fall in love and try to merge their families. Each arrives with a child and a complicated history, and their attempt to build a happy new household quickly collides with the messy reality of co-parenting alongside their exes, blending routines, and figuring out what it means to be a step-parent to someone else's kids.
Created by Felix Herngren, Moa Herngren, Clara Herngren and Calle Marthin, the series rotates its perspective among the adults and the children, refusing to cast anyone as a simple villain. Patrik's ex-wife Katja and Lisa's ex-husband are given full inner lives, and much of the show's humor and heartbreak comes from watching well-meaning grown-ups stumble through jealousy, logistics, and the small daily negotiations of a modern patchwork family. The children, often more clear-eyed than the adults, anchor the emotional stakes.
Anchored by Vera Vitali as Lisa, Erik Johansson as Patrik and Petra Mede as Katja, Bonus Family won the Kristallen award for Best TV Drama in 2017 and became a breakout international hit after Netflix acquired it, finding audiences far beyond Sweden. Tender, funny, and unflinchingly honest about the work of loving people across broken and rebuilt families, it ran for four seasons and 38 episodes before concluding in 2021.
