About El Reino
El Reino (The Kingdom) is an acclaimed Argentine political-conspiracy thriller created by filmmaker Marcelo Pineyro and novelist Claudia Pineiro for Netflix. Days before a national election, the leading presidential candidate is assassinated at a rally, and the shock thrusts his running mate, the charismatic evangelical pastor Emilio Vazquez Pena, toward the highest office in the country. What begins as a tragedy quickly opens into a tangled investigation, as the question of who benefits from the killing draws in the church, the security forces, and the political establishment.
Across two tightly plotted seasons, the series uses that single act of violence, kept deliberately in the background rather than dwelt upon, as the entry point to a portrait of how power is really assembled. The Vazquez Pena family and their Iglesia de la Luz command a vast congregation, a media operation, and a network of loyalists, and the show traces the moral compromises required to convert faith and grief into votes. A prosecutor follows the money and the bodies, a young lawyer rises as the pastor's fixer, and the family's own secrets press in from every side.
Praised for its writing, its ensemble cast, and its unflinching look at the fusion of religion and politics, El Reino became one of Netflix's most discussed Spanish-language dramas. Diego Peretti anchors the series as the pastor whose public sermons mask private calculation, surrounded by Nancy Duplaa, Peter Lanzani, Chino Darin, and Mercedes Moran. The second and final season, released in 2023, follows the consequences once the campaign reaches its end and the cost of the kingdom comes due.
