About Komi Can't Communicate
Komi Can't Communicate, known in Japanese as Komi-san wa Komyushou desu, is a gentle slice-of-life comedy adapted by studio OLM from Tomohito Oda's hit manga. It opens on the first day at the prestigious Itan Private High School, where the strikingly beautiful and elegant Shouko Komi instantly becomes the object of the entire student body's admiration. Her classmates assume she is cool, aloof, and untouchable, but the truth is that Komi suffers from a severe communication disorder that leaves her frozen with anxiety and unable to speak in front of others.
Her ordinary, observant deskmate Hitohito Tadano is the first person to see through the misunderstanding. After a quiet exchange written on the classroom chalkboard, Komi confides her real dream: she wants to make one hundred friends. Tadano pledges to help her reach that goal, and the series follows their patient, often hilarious progress as Komi learns to connect with the people around her one nervous step at a time.
Along the way the pair are swept up by the relentlessly energetic and gender-fluid childhood acquaintance Najimi Osana, who seems to know absolutely everyone, plus a sprawling cast of eccentric classmates. Warm, wholesome, and suitable for all ages, the show treats Komi's social anxiety with sincerity and tenderness while finding humour in everyday school life, festivals, and the small triumphs of friendship.
