About Kruk: Whispers Heard After Dark
Kruk, known in Polish as Kruk: Szepty slychac po zmroku (Raven: Whispers Heard After Dark), is a Polish crime thriller that premiered on Canal+ in 2018 and ran for three seasons through 2023. Directed by Maciej Pieprzyca and Adrian Panek, the series follows Commissioner Adam Kruk, a haunted investigator from the criminal division who returns to his hometown in the Podlasie region to work a disturbing child abduction case. The bleak, fog-bound landscapes around Bialystok give the show a distinctive atmosphere that sets it apart from glossier urban procedurals.
What makes Kruk unusual within the Polish crime genre is its restrained supernatural thread. The detective is troubled by an apparition that only he can perceive, and the series leaves space for the viewer to read these visions as either genuine hauntings or the residue of unresolved trauma. As Kruk works each case, the investigation repeatedly circles back to the wounds of his own childhood, including memories tied to an orphanage and the people he left behind when he moved away.
Across its three seasons the show widens its scope while keeping its psychological focus. The first season centers on a kidnapping in the region, the second follows a string of killings connected to red-haired women, and the third turns inward toward the mystery of the Raven and its grip on Kruk's family. Anchored by Michal Zurawski's brooding lead performance and a strong supporting ensemble, Kruk became one of Canal+ Poland's signature original dramas of its era.
