About Metallic Rouge
Produced by Studio Bones to mark the studio's 25th anniversary and directed by Motonobu Hori from an original concept credited to Yutaka Izubuchi, Metallic Rouge is a 2024 original science-fiction action series set in a far-future solar system where humanity coexists, uneasily, with humanlike androids called Neans. The thirteen-episode run aired on Fuji TV's +Ultra programming block from January to April 2024 and streamed internationally, pairing a noir-tinged detective premise with the studio's signature kinetic action animation.
The story follows Rouge Redstar, a rare Proto-Nean android, and her human partner Naomi Orthmann, who are dispatched to Mars on a mission to track down nine rogue Proto-Neans known as the Immortal Nine. What begins as a straightforward hunt steadily unravels into something larger, as each target forces Rouge to confront the rules written into her own existence and to ask whether she is truly free or merely following a program she did not choose.
Beneath its chase structure, Metallic Rouge is preoccupied with questions of identity, autonomy and what separates a person from a machine that can think, feel and grieve. As Rouge and Naomi peel back layers of conspiracy surrounding the Neans and the corporations that built them, the series leans into mystery and political intrigue while keeping its action clean and stylized rather than graphic, making it an accessible entry point for fans of thoughtful science-fiction anime.
