About O Mecanismo
O Mecanismo (The Mechanism) is a Brazilian crime and political-thriller series created by Jose Padilha and Elena Soarez, released worldwide on Netflix in 2018. Loosely fictionalized and drawing on the broad outlines of a sweeping federal corruption investigation, the show follows a pair of dogged federal police officers who pull on a single thread and watch it unravel into a vast web of money laundering, kickbacks, and bribery reaching from a gas-station money changer to the upper rooms of business and politics.
At its center is Marco Ruffo (Selton Mello), a federal agent so consumed by the case that it costs him his health, his marriage, and very nearly his career. When the investigation stalls and Ruffo is sidelined, the work passes to his former apprentice, Verena Cardoni (Caroline Abras), a methodical and relentless investigator who builds the painstaking financial trail that turns a routine inquiry into a national reckoning. The series treats its scheme as a 'mechanism' of institutional corruption rather than the work of any single villain.
Across two seasons and sixteen episodes, the story widens to take in fixers, contractors, and intermediaries who keep the money moving, with Roberto Ibrahim (Enrique Diaz) emerging as a key broker inside the network. Padilha frames the drama as a procedural about obsession and institutions, deliberately fictionalizing names and events and treating the surrounding crime in general terms. The result is a tense, morally complicated thriller about how far investigators will go, and what corruption costs everyone in its path.
