About Os Donos do Jogo
Os Donos do Jogo (international title Rulers of Fortune) is a Brazilian crime drama created by Heitor Dhalia, Bernardo Barcellos and Bruno Passeri, released on Netflix on October 29, 2025. Set in Rio de Janeiro, the series dramatizes the world of the jogo do bicho, a long-running and unofficial numbers-and-animals betting game that has been part of Brazilian street culture for over a century. The show treats this milieu as a fictional underworld of competing families and bosses rather than as a documentary account.
The story follows Profeta, an ambitious young newcomer from Campos dos Goytacazes who is determined to prove that he was born to sit among the city's most powerful figures. As he climbs through a layered hierarchy of alliances and rivalries, long-established clans find their grip on the trade challenged from several directions at once, including the prospect of legalized gambling and the arrival of outside interests eager to enter the local market.
Across its first season the series weaves together themes of family loyalty, ambition, betrayal and reinvention, balancing intimate domestic conflict with the larger power struggle for control of the city. Built around a large ensemble of Brazilian performers, Os Donos do Jogo positions itself as a glossy, character-driven saga in the tradition of organized-crime dramas, with Rio de Janeiro itself functioning almost as a character throughout.
