About Record of Lodoss War
Record of Lodoss War is a high-fantasy original video animation (OVA) series adapted from Ryo Mizuno's novels, which themselves grew out of recorded tabletop role-playing game sessions. Set on the war-torn island of Lodoss, often called the Accursed Island, the story follows a young and idealistic swordsman named Parn as he leaves his quiet village and is drawn into a sweeping conflict that threatens the entire realm. What begins as a small adventure steadily widens into an epic struggle between kingdoms, dark sorcery, and ancient powers that have shaped Lodoss since its creation.
Parn does not journey alone. He is joined by a memorable band of companions, including the high elf Deedlit, the steadfast dwarf warrior Ghim, the cheerful thief Woodchuck, the priest Etoh, and the apprentice mage Slayn. Together they navigate political intrigue, monstrous foes, and the schemes of the sorceress Karla, a mysterious figure who manipulates the balance of power on the island. As the party travels across forests, ruins, and battlefields, the series blends classic adventuring camaraderie with the larger weight of war and destiny.
Widely regarded as a touchstone of Western-style sword-and-sorcery anime, Record of Lodoss War helped popularize traditional European fantasy tropes — elves, dwarves, dragons, knights, and dark lords — within Japanese animation. Its measured, restrained storytelling, detailed world-building, and earnest heroic tone made it a gateway title for many international fans during the early years of anime distribution outside Japan. The OVA remains a celebrated example of faithful tabletop-inspired fantasy brought to the screen.
