About Slayers
Slayers is a comedic sword-and-sorcery anime adapted from the light novel series written by Hajime Kanzaka and illustrated by Rui Araizumi. First broadcast in 1995, it follows Lina Inverse, a brash and brilliant teenage sorceress who roams a fantasy world in search of treasure, bandit bounties, and good meals. Lina is famous for her enormous magical power, her short temper, and her willingness to flatten entire bandit camps to claim their loot, which makes her both feared and notorious wherever she travels.
Early in her adventures Lina is joined by Gourry Gabriev, a kindhearted but absent-minded swordsman who wields a powerful legendary blade and appoints himself her protector. Over the course of the original television run they are joined by other companions, including the cursed swordsman Zelgadis Greywords, who seeks a way to reverse a transformation that left him part golem and part demon, and the cheerful princess and white-magic priestess Amelia Wil Tesla Seyruun. Together the group stumbles from one escalating crisis to the next, blending slapstick humor with surprisingly high-stakes magical battles.
The original anime aired across three connected television series, Slayers, Slayers Next, and Slayers Try, broadcast from 1995 through 1997. Each season balances episodic comedy with longer story arcs in which Lina and her friends confront dark sorcerers, ancient demons, and world-threatening powers, often requiring Lina to unleash her most dangerous spells. The franchise became one of the defining comedic fantasy anime of the 1990s and later expanded with additional television seasons, films, and novels.
