About Star Trek: The Next Generation
Set in the 24th century, roughly a hundred years after the original 1960s series, Star Trek: The Next Generation follows the crew of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) as they explore the galaxy on behalf of the United Federation of Planets. Under the command of the disciplined and cerebral Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the ship pursues Starfleet's mission of peaceful exploration, scientific discovery, and diplomacy, while repeatedly being drawn into crises that test the Federation's ideals.
Across seven seasons the series introduced a deep ensemble cast and a new generation of iconic adversaries, most notably the cybernetic Borg, whose assimilation of Picard in 'The Best of Both Worlds' became one of television's most celebrated cliffhangers. The omnipotent trickster Q, the duplicitous Romulans, and the warrior culture of the Klingons all featured prominently, while episodes regularly used the trappings of science fiction to explore questions of identity, ethics, artificial life, and what it means to be human.
Premiering in first-run syndication in 1987, the show overcame early skepticism to become a ratings and cultural phenomenon, revitalizing the Star Trek franchise and spawning the spin-offs Deep Space Nine and Voyager as well as four feature films starring its cast. Praised for its optimistic vision of the future and its thoughtful, character-driven storytelling, it remains one of the most influential and beloved science-fiction series ever produced.
