About Shadow and Bone
Shadow and Bone unfolds in the war-torn nation of Ravka, a land violently divided by the Shadow Fold, a swathe of impenetrable darkness teeming with flesh-eating monsters called volcra. Crossing the Fold is the only way to move between the two halves of the country, and it claims lives with every passage. Into this fractured world steps Alina Starkov, an orphan and junior cartographer in the First Army who has spent her life feeling unremarkable and overlooked, clinging to her childhood friend Mal as her only family.
When the skiff carrying Alina across the Fold comes under attack, she unleashes a blinding burst of light that destroys the volcra and saves the survivors. The act reveals her to be a Sun Summoner, an almost mythical Grisha believed to be the only person capable of destroying the Fold and reuniting Ravka. She is swept away to the lavish Little Palace to train among the Grisha, where she draws the intense attention of General Kirigan, the powerful and enigmatic leader of the Second Army known to many as the Darkling.
Running parallel to Alina's story is a thread set in the bustling port city of Ketterdam, where a band of clever criminals known as the Crows is hired to pull off an impossible heist: cross the Fold, abduct the Sun Summoner, and deliver her for an enormous fortune. Led by the calculating Kaz Brekker, the crew weaves in and out of Alina's fate as she grapples with her newfound power, questions whom she can trust, and slowly uncovers the true ambitions of the man who claims to be her protector.
