About Emerald City
Emerald City is a dark and visually lavish reimagining of L. Frank Baum's Oz stories, premiering on NBC in 2017. A grown Dorothy Gale, a young nurse from Kansas, is swept up by a tornado along with a police dog and hurled into the strange and dangerous magical kingdom of Oz. Far from the candy-coloured fairy tale of earlier adaptations, this Oz is a brutal land of warring witches, ancient prophecy, and political intrigue, ruled by an authoritarian Wizard who has outlawed magic and rules through fear and spectacle.
As Dorothy follows the Yellow Brick Road toward the gleaming capital of Emerald City, she becomes entangled in the power struggles between the Wizard and the witches who once held sway over the land. Along the way she encounters a mysterious amnesiac man she names Lucas, the imprisoned and unsettling Glinda and Mistress West, and a hidden child whose true nature could topple the entire regime. Each leg of her journey strips away another layer of the kingdom's grim secrets.
Across its single ten-episode season, the series leans into mythology, body horror, and moral ambiguity, recasting familiar figures such as the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man as something far stranger and more menacing. Praised for its production design, sweeping cinematography, and bold visual scope yet criticised for its uneven pacing, Emerald City was cancelled after one season, leaving its grand reimagining of Oz unfinished.
