About Superboys of Malegaon
Superboys of Malegaon is a warm, funny love letter to filmmaking and friendship, set in the small power-loom mill town of Malegaon in Maharashtra. Nasir Shaikh, a film-besotted dreamer who runs a tiny video parlour, rallies his loyal circle of friends to make joyful, no-budget spoof remakes of the Bollywood and Hollywood hits they adore. With borrowed cameras, hand-built rigs and pure imagination, they invent a homegrown cinema entirely their own and turn their dusty hometown into an unlikely movie studio.
Directed by Reema Kagti and produced under the Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby banners, the film dramatizes the real-life Malegaon filmmaking phenomenon, building from the early parody shorts toward the town's beloved local blockbuster. Along the way the story balances slapstick laughs with the everyday struggles of working-class friends chasing an impossible dream, capturing both the giddy thrill of creation and the costs that come with it.
Beneath the comedy, Superboys of Malegaon is a tender meditation on why people make movies at all: not for money or fame, but for the joy of bringing a community together in a darkened room. It celebrates the irrepressible spirit of amateurs who refuse to wait for permission, and it honors the idea that cinema belongs to everyone, even those with nothing but heart, friends and a camera.
