About The Killing Vote
The Killing Vote is a 2023 South Korean thriller that aired on SBS and is based on a popular webtoon serialized on Kakao. The story opens when a masked, anonymous figure who calls himself Gaetal hijacks the nation's screens and puts a provocative question to the public: should a notorious criminal, one who has escaped meaningful punishment through legal loopholes or wealth, be put to death? Citizens are invited to register their answer by text, and if more than half of the responses favor the harshest verdict, the sentence is carried out. The premise is deliberately unsettling, and the series uses it less as spectacle than as a thought experiment about anger, due process, and the limits of the law.
At the center of the investigation is Kim Moo-chan, a sharp and principled detective who leads a regional investigation team and finds himself chasing a culprit the wider public has begun to cheer. Drawn into the case alongside him is Joo Hyeon, a cyber-safety officer whose technical skill helps trace how the votes are organized and broadcast. Looming over both of them is Kwon Seok-joo, a former professor serving a long prison sentence, whose past tragedy and brilliant mind make him both a suspect and a source of uncomfortable insight into why the votes resonate with so many.
Rather than glorify vigilante justice, the show keeps circling back to its central debate: what happens to a society when ordinary people are handed the power to decide who lives and who dies, and how easily collective fury can be steered. Park Hae-jin, Park Sung-woong, and Lim Ji-yeon anchor the ensemble, and the series builds its tension through investigation, moral argument, and shifting loyalties rather than graphic excess. The result is a tense procedural that asks viewers to sit with hard questions about fairness and accountability.
