About Volume
Volume is a Kenyan music drama that premiered on Netflix on December 20, 2023, directed by Tosh Gitonga and co-created with Njiiri Karago. Set in the noisy, ambitious heart of Nairobi, the six-episode series follows Benja, a gifted young rapper from a humble background who is desperate to turn his talent into a living. The title doubles as a thesis: in an industry that rewards the loudest voices and the flashiest connections, how far will a broke kid go to be heard?
As Benja chases a breakthrough, he is pulled into a world where the line between hustle and crime keeps blurring. His best friend Castro, a charismatic troublemaker with ties to a Nairobi crime family, opens doors that come with dangerous strings attached, while Andrea, a powerful club promoter and record label owner, controls the gatekeeping machinery that can make or break a new artist. Around them orbit the producers, influencers and hangers-on who define the modern Kenyan music scene.
Across its tight run, Volume blends the energy of a coming-of-age story with the tension of a crime drama, using the local hip hop and party circuit as its backdrop. It asks whether artistic integrity can survive contact with money and power, and what success really costs when the people offering it expect to own a piece of you. As one of the first Kenyan music dramas made for Netflix, the show was positioned as a showcase for homegrown talent and a snapshot of Nairobi nightlife.
