About Dragon Zakura
Dragon Zakura is a Japanese television drama produced by TBS, first broadcast in 2005 and adapted from the popular manga by Norifusa Mita. The series follows Kenji Sakuragi, a former motorcycle-gang member turned lawyer, who is hired to handle the bankruptcy of the failing Ryuzan High School. Rather than liquidate the school, Sakuragi pitches an audacious plan to rebuild its reputation: he will personally take a handful of the lowest-ranked students and get them admitted to the University of Tokyo, Japan's most prestigious institution, within a single year.
The drama centers on a special advancement class assembled from underachievers whom the rest of the school has written off. Sakuragi recruits a roster of eccentric specialist teachers and drills the students in unconventional, results-driven study techniques that challenge the rote habits of the Japanese exam system. Each episode pairs a concrete study strategy with the emotional obstacles the students face at home and in class, framing the entrance exam as both an academic mountain and a test of self-belief.
Praised for turning the dry subject of exam preparation into propulsive entertainment, Dragon Zakura became a cultural touchstone and helped launch several young cast members to stardom. A long-awaited sequel arrived in 2021 with Hiroshi Abe reprising the role of Sakuragi, again rallying a new group of struggling students toward the Todai dream. Both installments blend motivational drama with sharp commentary on education, class, and ambition in modern Japan.
