About Food for the Soul
Food for the Soul (Japanese title Hibi wa Sugiredo Meshi Umashi) is a wholesome slice-of-life anime adapted from the manga by Atto, the creator of Non Non Biyori. The series follows Mako Kawai, a first-year university student living on her own for the first time, who finds comfort and quiet joy in cooking. Mako adores good food but is too shy and anxious to dine out alone, so much of her culinary life unfolds in her small apartment kitchen, where she lovingly recreates the dishes she dreams about.
Everything changes when Mako joins a campus Food Culture Research Club and meets a warm circle of friends who share her appetite for both home cooking and local restaurants. Alongside outgoing classmate Shinon Ogawa and the steady, reliable Kurea Furutachi, Mako gradually steps outside her comfort zone, sampling new eateries, swapping recipes, and learning that meals taste best when shared. Each episode lingers on the small rituals of eating well and the gentle friendships built around a shared table.
Produced by P.A. Works and directed by Shinya Kawatsura with Yu Harumi, the series pairs lovingly rendered food animation with a soft, comforting tone. With no romance drama or conflict driving it, Food for the Soul belongs to the cozy food-and-friendship tradition, celebrating everyday meals, gentle growth, and the simple pleasure of saying a heartfelt thank-you before digging in. It aired across 12 episodes from April to June 2025 and streamed internationally on Crunchyroll.
