About Non Non Biyori
Non Non Biyori is a gentle iyashikei slice-of-life series set in the tiny rural village of Asahigaoka, a place so small that its entire school holds just five students of wildly different ages who all share a single classroom. Away from convenience stores, trains, and the noise of the city, the children fill their days with simple pleasures: bug catching, fishing in the river, sledding down snowy hills, and inventing games out of nothing at all. The result is a quiet, warm portrait of countryside childhood where almost nothing dramatic happens and that is precisely the point.
The story centres on the youngest of the group, the imaginative and unflappably deadpan first-grader Renge Miyauchi, whose curiosity turns ordinary days into small adventures, and on Hotaru Ichijo, a tall, mature fifth-grader who transfers in from Tokyo and slowly falls in love with the slow rhythm of village life. Rounding out the class are the bashful eldest sister Komari Koshigaya, who longs to be seen as a grown-up, and her energetic younger sister Natsumi, whose mischief keeps everyone on their toes.
Adapted by studio Silver Link from Atto's manga, the franchise unfolded over three television seasons, the original Non Non Biyori in 2013, Non Non Biyori Repeat in 2015, and Non Non Biyori Nonstop in 2021, alongside the 2018 feature film Non Non Biyori Vacation. Praised for its soft watercolour-style backgrounds, unhurried pacing, and genuine affection for its characters, the series became a beloved touchstone of the healing-anime genre.
