About Midnight Mass
Midnight Mass is a seven-episode supernatural horror miniseries created by Mike Flanagan for Netflix, released in 2021. It unfolds on Crockett Island, a tiny, isolated fishing community whose population and fortunes have dwindled over the years. Into this fading place arrives a charismatic young priest, Father Paul Hill, whose presence coincides with a wave of seeming miracles that reignite the faith of the islanders even as an unsettling dread begins to spread.
The story centers on Riley Flynn, a disgraced local who returns home to Crockett Island after serving prison time for a drunk-driving death. Haunted by guilt and stripped of belief, Riley reconnects with his family, with childhood sweetheart Erin Greene, and with a town that is both familiar and changed. As Father Paul preaches renewal and the impossible starts to feel ordinary, the community is drawn toward events that test the line between devotion and fanaticism.
Blending meditations on faith, addiction, grief, and mortality with mounting horror, the series builds to a reckoning that exposes the true cost of the island's miracles. Praised for its writing, performances, and long monologues on life and death, Midnight Mass became a defining entry in Flanagan's run of Netflix horror projects alongside The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.
