About The Haunting of Hill House
The Haunting of Hill House follows the five Crain siblings, who spent part of their childhood in a sprawling and decaying mansion that their parents intended to renovate and resell. The summer at Hill House ended in tragedy with the death of their mother, Olivia, and a desperate flight from the property in the middle of the night. Decades later the surviving family members remain scarred, each carrying private wounds and unanswered questions about what truly happened inside those walls.
The series braids two timelines together. In the past, parents Hugh and Olivia struggle to hold their young family together as the house begins to exert a strange and growing influence on them all. In the present, the adult siblings, Steven, Shirley, Theo, Luke, and Nell, are scattered and estranged until a fresh and devastating loss forces them back into contact. As they grieve, long-buried memories and old grievances resurface, and the line between psychological trauma and genuine haunting grows harder to draw.
Created by Mike Flanagan and loosely adapted from the 1959 novel by Shirley Jackson, the show uses the haunted house as a lens on grief, addiction, mental illness, and the difficulty of being truly known by the people closest to you. Praised for its layered storytelling, hidden background ghosts, and an acclaimed long-take episode, the ten-part series became a landmark of modern television horror and the first entry in Flanagan's anthology for Netflix.
