About Mom, Don't Do That!
Mom, Don't Do That! (Mama, Bie Nao Le) is a warm 2022 Taiwanese comedy-drama that premiered on Netflix, adapted from a popular novel and inspired by a true story. After the sudden death of her husband, sixtysomething Wang Mei-mei finds herself unexpectedly free and quietly lonely, and she decides she is not too old to look for love and companionship again. Her two grown daughters react with a mix of alarm, embarrassment, and reluctant amusement as their mother starts going on dates, joining matchmaking outings, and rediscovering a version of herself they have never really known.
The story is anchored by three women at three different stages of romantic life. Mei-mei, the newly widowed matriarch, is rejoining the dating world and refusing to fade quietly into grandmotherhood. Her elder daughter, Chen Ru-rong, is a level-headed forty-year-old still living at home and perpetually nagged about why she has not married, even as she guards old wounds about love and self-worth. The younger daughter, Chen Ruo-min, is freer and more impulsive in matters of the heart, and her choices force the family to talk honestly about desire, commitment, and what each of them actually wants.
Across its episodes the series balances broad family comedy with genuinely tender drama, using the mother's late-in-life romance as a mirror that makes both daughters reconsider their own relationships. It treats older women as desiring, complicated people rather than punchlines, and it lets all three leads stumble, argue, and forgive one another as they redraw the boundaries between mother and daughter. The result is a clean, heartfelt rom-com about grief giving way to second chances, and about a family learning that loving each other sometimes means letting each other be a little reckless.
