About Motherland: Fort Salem
Motherland: Fort Salem is set in an alternate version of the United States where witches ended their long persecution roughly three hundred years ago by striking a deal with the government known as the Salem Accords. In exchange for protection, witches agreed to fight for their country, and ever since they have served on the front lines of the military. The story picks up in the present day, where conscripted young witches are trained at a base called Fort Salem to use their combat magic against threats to the nation.
The series follows three new recruits whose lives become bound together during basic training. Raelle Collar is a rebellious healer skeptical of the army that she blames for her mother's death, Abigail Bellweather comes from a powerful and ancient witch dynasty and carries the weight of her family legacy, and Tally Craven is an idealistic believer in the cause who volunteered against her mother's wishes. As they learn to channel their power through their voices and vocal cords, the three form a tight unit and confront the brutal realities of war.
The central conflict involves a terrorist organization called the Spree, a group of rogue witches who reject conscription and use their magic to attack civilians. Over three seasons the show expands its mythology to include the Camarilla, an ancient anti-witch faction, and explores the origins of witchcraft, the politics of the witch military, and the personal costs paid by the young soldiers. The Freeform drama ran for three seasons before concluding in 2022, building a devoted fan following for its blend of military thriller, supernatural worldbuilding, and queer romance.
