About The Breakthrough
The Breakthrough, known in Swedish as Genombrottet, is a 2025 Swedish limited crime drama produced by FLX for Netflix, directed by Lisa Siwe from a screenplay by Oskar Soderlund. The four-part series dramatizes one of Sweden's most quietly historic investigations: a double murder that went unsolved for sixteen years before a patient detective and a pioneering genealogy-DNA expert finally identified the person responsible. It is adapted from the non-fiction account by journalist Anna Bodin and genealogist Peter Sjolund, and it treats the underlying tragedy with restraint, keeping its focus on the long search for answers rather than on the violence itself.
Peter Eggers stars as detective John Sundin, a composed and dogged investigator who refuses to let the cold case fade from the department's attention. Across the years the trail repeatedly goes silent, and Sundin carries the weight of a community that wants resolution and two families who have waited far too long. The series uses his persistence as its emotional spine, showing how routine police work, dead ends, and stubborn hope can coexist inside a single investigation that never quite closes.
The turning point arrives through Per, played by Mattias Nordkvist, a meticulous and reserved genealogist who proposes an approach that had never before cracked a murder case in the region: using forensic genetic genealogy to trace family trees from crime-scene DNA toward a suspect. Jessica Liedberg appears as Francy, part of the circle of people drawn into the effort. Methodical and humane in tone, The Breakthrough frames the case as a milestone in forensic history while remaining mindful of the real victims and the years of grief behind the headlines.
