About The Fiery Priest
The Fiery Priest is a 2019 South Korean action-comedy that aired on SBS and follows Kim Hae-il, a Catholic priest with a notoriously short temper and a hidden past as a former intelligence agent. Assigned to a parish in the bustling Gudam district, Hae-il is the kind of clergyman who would rather settle an argument with his fists than a sermon, and his superiors keep him on a tight leash. When the elderly priest who mentored him is found dead under circumstances the authorities are far too quick to rule an accident, Hae-il refuses to accept the official story and sets out to find the truth himself.
His one-man crusade quickly drags in two reluctant allies. Goo Dae-young is a bumbling, conflict-avoiding detective who would rather close a case than reopen one, and Park Kyung-sun is a sharp, ambitious prosecutor whose instinct for self-preservation is tested as the trail leads toward powerful people. The three form an unlikely trio, bickering constantly and tripping over one another even as they edge closer to a web of corruption that links local officials, police, and businessmen who all have reasons to keep the case buried.
Balancing broad slapstick humor with a genuine justice caper, the series turns its odd team into a crowd-pleasing engine for righting wrongs. The action is played for momentum and comedy rather than grim spectacle, and the heart of the show is the way a hotheaded priest, a timid cop, and a calculating prosecutor slowly learn to trust one another. A breakout ratings hit, The Fiery Priest became one of the most popular Korean dramas of its year and earned its lead a Baeksang acting award.
