About Cangaco Novo
Cangaco Novo is a 2023 Brazilian action-drama produced for Amazon Prime Video and set in the sun-baked sertao, the arid backlands of Brazil's Northeast. The story follows Ubaldo, a sheltered young bank employee from Sao Paulo whose comfortable city life is upended when he learns that the late father he barely knew was the leader of a modern-day cangaco, a present-day echo of the legendary banditry that haunts the region's folklore. Drawn back to the land of his origins, Ubaldo discovers a family and a legacy he never knew existed.
At the center of the series is a story about family and inheritance. In the sertao Ubaldo finds two half-sisters, Dinorah and Dilvania, each tied to that legacy in a different way, and an aunt who raised them. As Ubaldo is pulled into a world shaped by his father's name, the series weaves together Northeastern Brazilian folklore, the mythology of the cangaco, and the music and traditions of the region. The banditry itself is treated as the backdrop to a deeper question of belonging, identity, and what a son owes to a father he never truly knew.
Shot largely in the interior of Ceara with a predominantly Northeastern cast, Cangaco Novo is a stylish, atmospheric take on a setting long romanticized in Brazilian song and storytelling. Its eight-episode first season earned strong audience interest and awards recognition, including acting honors and nominations at Brazilian industry ceremonies, and helped raise the profile of its largely regional ensemble. A continuation of the story has been confirmed, extending Ubaldo's journey through the sertao.
