About Gannibal
Gannibal is a Japanese live-action thriller that premiered on Disney Plus in December 2022, adapted from Masaaki Ninomiya's manga and directed by Shinzo Katayama. The series follows Daigo Agawa, a police officer who relocates with his wife and young daughter to the remote mountain village of Kuge to take over as the area's sole resident officer. What looks at first like a quiet rural posting quickly curdles into dread as Daigo learns that his predecessor vanished and that the close-knit community guards a secret it will go to great lengths to protect.
When an elderly villager is found dead under strange circumstances and her ailing granddaughter behaves with unsettling calm, Daigo begins to suspect that the powerful Goto clan, which dominates life in Kuge, may be tied to a string of disappearances stretching back generations. The deeper he digs, the more the villagers close ranks against the outsider, and Daigo must weigh his duty as an officer against the safety of his own family in a place where the line between neighbor and threat keeps blurring.
Across two seasons the show builds a slow-burn atmosphere of isolation and paranoia, using the fog-bound landscape and tight village hierarchy to ratchet up tension. Season one establishes the mystery and Daigo's growing obsession, while season two, released in March 2024, expands the conflict and pushes the confrontation between the Agawa family and the Goto clan toward a reckoning. Rather than leaning on spectacle, Gannibal keeps its horror grounded in human behavior, secrecy, and the weight of a community's collective silence.
