About Our Beloved Summer
Our Beloved Summer (Korean title Geu Hae Uri Neun, literally That Year, We) is a South Korean television series that aired on SBS TV from December 2021 to January 2022 and streamed internationally on Netflix. The romantic comedy-drama follows Choi Ung and Kook Yeon-su, former high school sweethearts who endured a painful breakup and swore never to see each other again. Their plans are upended when a low-budget documentary they filmed together as teenagers, originally pairing the laziest student in class with the top-ranked student, unexpectedly goes viral years later and pulls them back into each other's lives.
Now in their late twenties, Choi Ung has become a quietly successful muralist and architectural illustrator who hides his sensitivity behind an easygoing exterior, while Kook Yeon-su has grown into a driven, self-reliant marketing professional shaped by years of financial hardship. When public demand for a follow-up documentary forces them to reunite on camera, the two are made to revisit their shared past, confront the misunderstandings that ended their relationship, and slowly reckon with feelings that never fully faded.
Told partly through documentary-style talking-head interviews that let characters narrate their own perspectives directly to the viewer, the series weaves between the present day and flashbacks to the protagonists' school years. Around the central couple, the story follows documentary producer Kim Ji-ung, Choi Ung's childhood friend who carries his own long-held feelings, and webtoon artist Kim Wook, known online as NoonZ, whose comic relief masks deeper loneliness. Praised for its warm tone, mature handling of second-chance romance, and emotionally grounded characters, Our Beloved Summer became a quiet streaming favorite and one of the era's most beloved Korean rom-coms.
